United 93

Right now the girlfriend and I are watching the movie United 93 the tragic but heroic story of the events of September 11th.

Watching the flick I realize how inept our government can be in an emergency situation. Each time when one agency finds a solution to problem in the movie, another agency seems to block it. Too much red tape delays reaction time in difficult situations.

But the reactions of those passengers on the flight United 93 shows the ability of small groups coupled with technology can make a difference in this war on terror. The passengers communicated by way of cellphone to see the situation on the ground and then responded quickly against the terrorists. Smaller can sometimes be better...

(By the way, for a good discussion of how technology enables individuals to make a big difference in the world check out Glenn Reynolds' book An Army Of Davids).
